Dragon Gate

Dragon Gate is a card minigame that opens on a schedule while you are live. Two "gate cards" are laid out on screen, viewers join with channel points during a countdown, and then a third card is turned over: if its value lands between the two gate cards, it is through the gate. Dealing, revealing and settling are all decided by the server and everyone in a round gets the same result, so there is nothing for you to start or watch over.

Getting started

  1. Make sure channel points are enabled; joining a round costs channel points. The settings live under Minigames inside Channel points, and the Dragon Gate card there has its on/off switch.
  2. On the Settings tab, choose the round interval, how long each round stays open for joining, and the minimum and maximum amount a viewer can put in.
  3. On the Commands tab, check that !dgate is enabled. It is off by default; while it is off, rounds still open but nobody can join.
  4. To open a round right away while waiting for the next one, a MOD or the broadcaster can type !dgatenext. It is also off by default. It does nothing while a round is running, while the result is still on screen, or while you are offline, and later rounds keep the usual interval.
  5. On the Messages tab, decide whether chat should talk. Turn the round start announcement on to play with text only, or turn everything off to rely on the screen alone.
  6. To show it on stream, add the source URL from the OBS widget tab to your streaming software. You can also skip that; see "Playing without the OBS widget" below.

How a round works

At the start of each round the system draws two cards from a 52-card deck and places them left and right: these are the gate cards. Ace is the lowest (counts as 1) and King the highest (counts as 13); suits are cosmetic and never affect the result. Viewers look at the gate cards and join with !dgate points before the countdown ends. When it hits zero, the third card is turned over and there are exactly three outcomes:

  • Through the gate: the third card's value lies between the two gate cards.
  • So close: the third card's value lies outside the two gate cards.
  • Hit the post: the third card has the same value as either gate card.

A round has exactly one result, shared by everyone who joined. Viewers do not compete against each other; each one is only up against the cards. If the two gate cards have the same value or are neighbours (nothing fits between them), the right card is redrawn, so the gate always has room for at least one value. The deck is reshuffled every round, and the third card is only drawn at the moment of the reveal, so it does not exist before then and cannot leak from anywhere.

Twice the entry is held: how settling works

When a viewer types !dgate 100, they are putting in 100 points, but the system first holds double, 200 points. A viewer holding less than twice the entry cannot join. all means half of what they hold (since double is held), then capped by your maximum. Percentages use the same base: !dgate 50% is half of the most they could put in, which is a quarter of what they hold, and 100% equals all. If percentages were based on everything they hold, anything above 50% could never cover the double hold. After the reveal, the held points are settled by outcome:

  • Through the gate: the held 200 is returned, plus the reward (100 at fixed 1:1), so the net change is +100.
  • So close: only 100 is returned, so the net change is -100.
  • Hit the post: the held 200 is not returned, so the net change is -200.

The hold happens at the moment of joining, so settling can never fail for lack of points. How many times one viewer can join a single round is set on the Settings tab; the default is once.

Reward multiplier: fixed 1:1 or based on gate width

What going through the gate rewards is decided by the multiplier mode. Gate width means how many values fit between the two gate cards; the more fit, the wider the gate and the easier it is to get through.

Fixed 1:1 always rewards 1x the entry. It is simple, but it comes with a cost you should know about up front: at a gate width of 8 or more, viewers come out ahead over time (a width of 7 breaks even), and since viewers can see the gate cards before deciding to join, they naturally pick wide gates and skip narrow ones. The result is that channel points slowly inflate. That is a trade-off you accept when you choose fixed mode, not a bug.

Based on gate width (recommended) adjusts the multiplier to the gate: the narrower the gate, the harder it is and the higher the multiplier; a very wide gate drops below 1x. Two values are adjustable:

  • Reserve (default 5%): a small share taken off the multiplier that would exactly break even. At 0% the long-run expectation is level; the higher you set it, the more points are drawn back out each round, so channel points slowly shrink instead of inflating.
  • Maximum multiplier (default 10x): the break-even multiplier for the narrowest gate can reach 13x; anything above this value is capped.

The multiplier is worked out once when the round opens and never changes afterwards, so settling uses exactly the number shown on screen and in chat. Results are rounded down. The Settings tab has a preview table that lists the real multiplier for every gate width under your current settings. Whether the multiplier is shown on screen, or mentioned in the round start announcement, is up to you.

Only opens while you are live, run by the server

Dragon Gate only opens rounds while you are live. The server keeps the schedule, so you do nothing. After you go live it waits for the first-round delay, opens the first round, and then opens each next round one round interval after the previous one is cleared; both are set on the Settings tab.

  • A round in progress when you go offline settles normally. Held points are resolved by the result, not refunded. No new round opens afterwards; scheduling restarts the next time you go live.
  • If you turn off Dragon Gate or channel points mid-round, that round is voided: no reveal, and everyone's held points are refunded in full. This differs from going offline because going offline is outside your control and viewers have already joined, whereas turning the module off is you disabling it, and a disabled module should not move anyone's points.
  • Late-entry grace seconds is for streams with high delay. The on-screen countdown still hits zero on time, but the server keeps accepting entries for this many extra seconds and delays the reveal to match, so viewers a beat behind still make it. The default is 0, meaning no grace.

Playing without the OBS widget: setting up chat messages

The OBS widget only displays the game and the server decides every result, so rounds still open without the widget. To play with text only, turn on the round start announcement; chat will name the two gate cards and viewers can join straight from chat. The widget can also be added to several scenes at once, and each shows the same round.

There are four chat messages, each with its own switch and an editable template:

  • Round start announcement (off by default): announces the two gate cards, the multiplier and how long joining stays open.
  • Join reply (off by default): a short reply when a viewer joins. It gets noisy with many viewers, hence off by default.
  • Missed-the-gate announcement (off by default): one message for "so close" and another for "hit the post", each with its own text.
  • Reward list (on by default): sent only when the result is through the gate, listing how many points each player received; a long list is split into several messages automatically.

The top of the Messages tab has two quick-apply buttons: Overlay only turns all four switches off and Chat only turns them all on. They just flip the switches for you, and still need saving to take effect; the individual switches are always what counts. You can also set a chat message delay so announcements land a few seconds later to match your stream delay. That delays chat only; points still settle immediately.

Visuals, sounds and Pro

The screen has a transparent background: two gate cards left and right, a deck in the middle, and the third card turned over in the deck's place. You can adjust the card size, whether the multiplier shows between the gate cards, whether the idle screen keeps the deck and a "next round" countdown (off by default, so nothing shows between rounds), and the small cards that pop up under the cards when a viewer joins (the format is editable, as is how many can stack at once). The text shown for through the gate, so close and hit the post can also be put in your own words.

There are six sounds: deal, reveal, through the gate, so close, hit the post and viewer joins. Each can use a built-in sound, be turned off or use your own audio file, and there is one master volume. Built-in sounds are free; uploading your own audio files is Pro. The viewer-joins sound is off by default, since a busy round would chime for every single entry; turn it on if you want it.

There are six style sets. Default is free; Classic, Night sky, Washi, Pastel and Pixel are Pro. A style set recolours the whole screen: cards, countdown, multiplier, join cards and result text. Pro also lets you upload a card back image, a card face base image (the system overlays the value and suit on it), or one image for each value from A to K; those per-value images get no suit overlay, so draw it into the image yourself. You can mix all three. The order of priority is: per-value images first, then the card back and card face images, then the style set.

Pro settings are never deleted: when the channel is not on Pro, the screen and sounds simply fall back to the free style set and the built-in sounds, while the images and audio files you saved stay as they are and take effect as soon as you upgrade.

History is kept for 7 days; the public page is a ChiwaBoost perk

Every round and every entry is recorded, and records are kept for 7 days only before being cleared automatically. The History tab in the dashboard lists each round's gate cards, third card, result and multiplier; expanding a round shows who joined, how much they put in, and how their points changed. The danger zone lets you clear all finished records early, and that cannot be undone.

Your channel's public page has a Dragon Gate sub-tab under "Minigames", but that is a perk viewers get after buying or trying ChiwaBoost, and it only shows a signed-in viewer their own entries, never anyone else's. You do not control it and there is nothing to set up for it.

Settings

The text below is taken from the in-app help, so it stays in sync with the actual interface.

SettingWhat it does
Round interval (minutes)How long to wait after a round is cleared before opening the next one.
First round delay (seconds)How long after going live the first round opens; 0 opens it right away.
Join window (seconds)How many seconds viewers have to type !dgate after the gate cards are dealt.
Result display (seconds)How long the result stays on screen after the reveal before the cards are cleared.
Late join grace (seconds)With stream delay, viewers see the countdown late. The on-screen countdown still hits zero on time, but the server keeps accepting entries for this many extra seconds and delays the reveal to match. 0 means no grace.
Minimum entryThe fewest points a viewer can put in per entry.
Maximum entryThe most points a viewer can put in per entry; 0 means no limit. Typing all puts in half of what the viewer holds, capped by this limit.
Entries per roundHow many times the same viewer can join a single round.
ReserveThe share taken off the fair multiplier. At 0% viewers break even over time; the higher it is, the more points flow back out.
Maximum multiplierEven the narrowest gate never pays more than this.
CappedThis row is held down by the maximum multiplier.
Quick setup:"Overlay only" turns off every chat message below and "Chat only" turns them all on. Only the switches change; nothing takes effect until you save.
Chat message delay (seconds)Posts announcements this many seconds late to match your stream delay, so chat does not spoil the result before the screen does. Only messages are delayed; points still settle right away.
Show multiplierShows the multiplier, like "×2.6", between the two gate cards. Fixed mode shows "×1".
Show idle screenBetween rounds, only the deck and a "next round" countdown stay on screen; while offline, only the deck. Turn this off to hide everything between rounds.
Card sizeCard width on a 1920-wide screen. All text scales with it.
Show join chipsWhen a viewer joins, a small chip pops up below the cards and fades out after a few seconds.
Chip textLeave blank to use the default text in the bot language.
Chips shown at onceAny extra are folded into "+N".
Card backUsed for the deck and face-down cards. A 5:7 portrait image works best.
Card face backgroundThe rank and suit are drawn on top of this image. A 5:7 portrait image works best.
Master volumeShared by all six sounds; 0 mutes them. In OBS, tick "Control audio via OBS" on the browser source so it shows up in the mixer.

Chat commands

These are the default command names; they can be renamed or given aliases in the dashboard.

  • !dgate — Join the current Dragon Gate round with channel points; twice your entry is held until the card is revealed (!dgate points|all|N%).
  • !dgatenext — Start the next Dragon Gate round right away while waiting between rounds (!dgatenext, MOD).

Other notes

  • Rounds only open while you are live. The first one opens after the first-round delay, and each later one opens a set interval after the previous round is cleared. A round in progress when you go offline still settles normally.
  • When a viewer joins, twice their entry is held. Through the gate returns the held points plus the reward; so close returns half; hitting the post returns nothing.
  • Through the gate always rewards 1x the entry. With a gate width of 8 or more, viewers come out ahead over time and channel points slowly inflate. Switch to "Based on gate width" to keep the total in check.
  • The narrower the gate, the harder it is to get through and the higher the multiplier. Multiplier = fair multiplier minus the reserve, capped by the maximum multiplier, rounded down.
  • Calculated live from the current settings; each round uses the multiplier from this table when it opens. Gate width is how many ranks sit between the two gate cards.
  • Changes the colors of the whole screen: cards, countdown, multiplier, join chips and result text. Anything other than Default needs Pro; you can still save it on the free plan, but the screen shows the Default style.
  • The large text in the middle after the reveal, also used for {result} in message templates. Leave blank to use the default text in the bot language.
  • You can mix these with a style set. Priority: per-rank image > card face and card back images > style set.
  • Replaces the whole card face for one rank. Rank and suit are not drawn on top, so the image needs to show them itself.
  • Rounds still open while you are live. Turn on the round start announcement on the Messages tab and viewers can join from chat. The OBS widget only displays the game; the server decides every result, so you can add it to several scenes.
  • Built-in sounds are free; uploading or linking your own audio files needs Pro.
  • Deletes every finished round and its entries. Rounds in progress are kept. This cannot be undone.
